Want to buy Australian bacon and support Australian farmers? Check the country of origin label, including the bar chart and the percentage of Australian ingredients. “Made in Australia” on its own does not mean the pork was grown here.
At The Lucky Pig, all our meat is Australian. Our bacon and ham start with quality free-range Australian pork and are made by us, right here in Bentleigh. Here is how to make an informed choice wherever you shop.

Does “Made in Australia” mean Australian pork?
No. Bacon and ham can be made in Australia using imported pork. The place where a product is made and the place where its meat was grown are different pieces of information.
If supporting Australian pork farmers matters to you, read beyond the front of the pack. An Australian-looking brand or a kangaroo symbol alone does not answer that question.
How to tell if bacon and ham are Australian
- Find the country of origin label. Read the wording alongside the bar chart.
- Look for an almost full bar. Australian Pork recommends looking for more than 90% Australian ingredients when choosing ham and bacon.
- Look for the pink Australian Pork logo. This identifies products made using Australian pork.
- Ask your butcher if you are unsure. “Is the pork Australian, and where is this bacon made?” is a useful question.
The percentage describes the Australian ingredients in the whole product. It is not a separate measurement of the pork's origin. The over-90% advice is a practical guide for ham and bacon, rather than a rule to apply to every food.
For the industry guidance behind this advice, see Australian Pork's guide to buying Australian ham and bacon.
Why isn't the label always 100% Australian?
Ham and bacon contain more than meat. Some curing ingredients may be imported, so a product made using Australian pork can still show less than 100% Australian ingredients. Read the full statement rather than assuming a partly filled bar means the pork is imported.
