Slow Cooked Pulled Beef Pie

This is proper comfort food. Slow cooked pulled beef in a rich gravy, topped with golden puff pastry and baked until crisp. Using quality diced chuck steak gives you tender, flavour-packed beef that falls apart and builds a pie worth the wait.

Ingredients

  • 500g diced beef
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 tbsp flour
  • 1 cup beef stock
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 sheet puff pastry + scraps
  • 1 egg (for wash)
  • Sesame seeds to top

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 160°C.
  2. Heat a large pot or deep pan over medium-high heat. Add the diced beef and cook until browned all over. Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same pot, cook the diced onion until softened, then add garlic and cook until fragrant.
  4. Sprinkle in the flour and stir well, cooking it out for a minute. Gradually add beef stock, stirring to form a smooth sauce, then add Worcestershire sauce.

  1. Return the beef to the pot and bring to a gentle simmer. Reduce heat, cover, and cook for 2 to 2.5 hours until tender and easily shreddable. Stir occasionally and add a splash of water if needed.
  2. Allow the filling to cool slightly.
  3. Preheat oven to 200°C.
  4. Spoon filling into a pie dish and spread evenly.
  5. Top with puff pastry in a rustic patchwork style.
  6. Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
  7. Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden and puffed.
  8. Serve warm straight from the oven.
